Spark or Awakening “Serelt”

Developing interest in international cinematography was matched by an increase in the number of Mongolian filmmakers being sent to study abroad. In 1956 more than twenty students were sent to the USSR for industrial and technical internships, as well as universities in other states. A meeting of the Soviet-Mongolian Joint Commission on Cultural Cooperation held during the same year decided to expand the film industry. It was decided that, every year, Mongolia would make 24 short film episodes, translate six international black and white films, and make one color and one feature film. The resolution to make a full-length color film with the help of Soviet filmmakers led to the creation of the industrial-themed film New Year and an agricultural film Sin in Front. Both films were inspired by socialist realism.

Released in 1957, the most notable film for this period was Spark or Awakening (Serelt). Spark was written by L.Vangan and Ch.Chimid, directed by S.Genden and filmed by D.Jigjid.  It was acclaimed for its direction, well-written script and powerful scenes, and is seen as a landmark in the development of Mongolian cinematography. Another film of this era, What is Stopping Us, was made by R.Dorjpalam in 1956. Its ridiculing of contemporary life and bureaucracy has resonance in today’s world. It also played an important role in developing the comedy genre in Mongolian cinema.
