‘CITY OF WIND’ AS THE FILM TO REPRESENT
MONGOLIA AT THE 96TH OSCAR ACADEMY AWARDS
The 2024 (the 96th) Oscars Academy Awards will be held in Los Angeles in March 2024. Among Mongolian films made in 2023, Mongolian National Film Council has determined feature film ‘City of Wind’ as the nominee for the preliminary selection for nomination for the Oscars Academy Awards.
Annually, over 90 countries are privileged with this right and the academy sifts through films of the countries to announce a shortlist consists of 15 films that are determined as useful or valuable.
At the final stage, the judges vote to determine the final nominations from the shortlist, and to determine the winner from the final nominations. Voting for nominations and awards is done by secret ballot.
The feature film ‘City of Wind’ directed by Lkhagvadulam Purev-Ochir was awarded certain benefits of public fund provided by Mongolian Film Fund, and it was selected in the ‘Horizonti’ section of 80th Venice International Film Festival. Actor Tergel Bold-Erdene won the best actor honor in Venice’s Horizons section for his turn as a main character in the feature debut City of Wind. Moreover, the film was selected in the ‘A window on Asian cinema’ section of the 28th Busan International Film Festival on which the film was shown to the South Korean audiences with 2 screenings in one day.
The film was launched at the Toronto International Film Festival, as well as at the 15th Ulaanbaatar Film Festival on October 16. The film was selected for the opening session of the festival reaching Mongolian audiences.
