The center of Bayan-Ulgii province is Ulgii city. It is located on the western edge of Mongolia, 1,686 km from Ulaanbaatar, at an altitude of 1,710 meters above sea level. Ulgii District was established in 1940, and in 1961 it was renamed Ulgii city. In 1972 a Parliamentary resolution set the boundaries of the city of Ulgii, and allocated it an area of 10,092 hectares
