In 1972 the UNESCO Convention Concerning the Protection of the Natural and Cultural Heritage was adopted and implemented in order to protect, promote and pass on the natural and cultural heritage to future generations. Mongolia acceded to the World Heritage Convention in 1990 and as of 2020 the following five heritages are included in the World Heritage List. These include:

Under the natural category:

  • Uvs Lake Basin (2003)
  • Daurian landscape (2017)

Under the cultural category:

  • Orkhon Valley Cultural Monument (2004)
  • Rock Painting Complex of the Mongolian Altai Mountains (2011)
  • Burkhan Khaldun Mountain and the surrounding sacred area (2015)
