LOCATION: DARVI AND TONKHIL DISTRICTS, GOBI-ALTAI PROVINCE

Suitai Khairkhan mountain is located between Tonkhil and Darvi Districts of Gobi-Altai Province, and Tsetseg and Darvi Districts of neighboring Khovd Province. This mountain, with its dark forests, is considered to be one of the thirteen main snow-capped mountains of the Altai range. The headwaters of the Khairkhan river flow into Tonkhil lake in this region. On a small hill at the foot of Suitai Khairkhan mountain is a sacred cairn (ovoo) called Ikh Ovoo that has been worshiped since ancient times. In 2008 Ikh Ovoo was the location of a ritual in which Suitai Khairkhan was made a state shrine. It is located 1,016 kilometers from Ulaanbaatar.
