The Onon river rises in the foothills of the Great Khentii mountains at a height of 1,980 above sea level. The Onon flows 818 kilometers from its source in eastern Mongolia until it reaches the Pacific Ocean. 445 kilometers of the river’s course are located in the territory of Mongolia. The Onon’s waters recede in late October, dry up in the second half of November, and are covered with ice for between 150 and 170 days during winter. When frozen, the average ice thickness of the river is between 1.2 and 1.5 meters. Genghis Khan is said to have been born at Deluun Boldog, the headwaters of the Onon river. A great assembly (Great Khural) held in 1206, when Genghis Khan was elevated to become Emperor of Mongolia, took place on the banks of the Onon. It is located 153 kilometers from Ulaanbaatar.
