HistoricLIGIIN WHITE CAVE

LOCATION: BAYANLIG DISTRICT, BAYANKHONGOR PROVINCE

NOTE: This cave, located in Bayanlig District of Bayankhongor Province, was first discovered in 1987 by the joint Mongolian-Soviet Stone Age Historical and Cultural Expedition. It was studied further between 1995 and 2000 by a joint Mongolian-Russian-American archeological expedition. This research showed that Mongolia and Central Asia experienced mild winters during the late Quaternary period. It also established that humans lived in the region 700,000 years ago, during the Pleistocene period, which is 200,000 years earlier than previously thought. This confirms the classical theory of the Stone Age that humans lived during the Olduvai period, 700,000 years ago.
