LOCATION: BARUUN BUREN DISTRICT, SELENGE PROVINCE
Amarbayasgalant monastery sits on a plateau northeast of the Iven river. It is surrounded by a 208 meter long and 176 meter wide wall with a south-facing gate. Ten so-called white temples are built inside the outer walls to the north, west and east, with four of them visible from anywhere. There is a fenced area to the south of the main entrance temple in front of the outer wall. The monastery’s sixteen main temples are built inside a second set of internal walls. An area called Suvargain Am is located in the mountains to the north of the monastery. In the past, eight stupas for the Buddha and three recitation temples were built here, but today only the stupas’ foundations remain. One of the features of the location of Amarbayasgalant monastery is that it can be reached from all directions, and a number of roads have historically passed this important site. It is located 220 kilometers from Ulaanbaatar.
