LOCATION: SHARGA, JARGALAN, BAYAN-UUL AND TAYSHIR DISTRICTS, GOBI-ALTAI PROVINCE
Khasagtkhairkhan mountain is located 3,578 meters above sea level and is one of the smaller mountains in the Altai region. It rises in the western Great Lakes depression area, which stretches across Gobi-Altai province’s Sharga, Jargalan, Bayan-Uul and Taishir districts. The deep gorges and valleys of the mountain have a majestic appearance, and are often cut across by rocky peaks, cliffs, pebbles, smooth glacial rocks and debris from avalanches. Foothills are covered with Gobi sand, but forests grow in an area of 100 km2 in the steppe zone at an altitude of 2,200 to 3000 meters. An alpine belt is located at altitudes above 3,000 meters. Khasagtkhairkhan mountain is unusual for being home to desert, steppe and forest-taiga ecological zones. It is located 886 kilometers from Ulaanbaatar.
