LOCATION: ALAG-ERDENE, RENCHINLKHUMBE, KHANKH AND CHANDMANI-UNDUR DISTRICTS, KHUVSGUL PROVINCE
Lake Khuvsgul, which spans the territories of Alag-Erdene, Renchinlkhumbe, Khankh and Chandmani-Undur Districts of Khuvsgul Province, is believed to be seven million years old. It is located 101 kilometers north of the provincial capital Murun. Lake Khuvsgul covers an area of 2,760 square kilometers. It is 34-36 kilometers wide, 136 kilometers long and 262 meters deep, and located at an altitude of 1,645 meters above sea level. The lake has a total coastline of 414 kilometers and is the second largest in Asia in terms of water resources. About 70 percent of the lake’s bottom area, which accounts for 1 percent of the world’s freshwater, is more than 100 meters deep. By the second half of November it is completely frozen and its ice is 1 meter thick. Lake Khuvsgul is located 580 kilometers from Ulaanbaatar.
