Erdenet Mining Company, located in Orkhon aimag, was established in 1973 under an agreement between the Governments of Mongolia and Russia, and began operations in 1978 with the first concentrate. The history of the Erdenet plant, the largest development in Mongolia in the 20th century, dates back to that time, and the comprehensive development of the mining city of Erdenet, with its complex infrastructure, became a classic model for large-scale mining projects.
