NatureBAYAN ZAG

LOCATION: BULGAN DISTRICT, OMNOGOVI PROVINCE

Bayan Zag takes its name from the dense saxaul (zag) forests that grow there. It is also known as Shiree Shavar and Camel Shavar, and was referred to as Shavar Us in documents produced by explorers of Central Asia. Bayan Zag’s forests hide traces left by ancient people who lived in the area 40,000 years ago, and in even earlier times. Bayan Zag is also famous for its red clay soils, which cover an area 5 kilometers wide and about 8 kilometers long. It is said that they look like ‘a red fire burning in the evening sun’. A scientific study of the region discovered dinosaur fossils estimated to be between 60 and 80 million years old, making Bayan Zag a world-famous location in the field of paleontology. It is located 484 kilometers from Ulaanbaatar.
