NatureZURKHEN ISLAND

The people of Bayan-Uul Soum in Dornod Province worship Ulikhan Maikhan Mountain.  Historians assume that the name of the province, Olhunuud, which looks like Oulen’s mother, became “Ulikhan”.  The Olhunuud’s are the descendants of the Shiwei, who lived in the eastern part of Mongolia in the 10th-12th centuries. Since the 10th century, they lived in the thickets of the Onon River and the continuation of the Han Khentii mountain range along with many Mongolian tribes.  At some point, Buir Lake Ulikhan Mountain looks like a tent from the front, so it was recorded as “Ulikhan Maikhan Mountain” in scriptures.  Ulikhan Maikhan Mountain is called “Five Branches of Onon” as it flows along the Onon River.  When it diverges and flows back to the main river, it forms a heart-shaped island, which is named “Heart Island” as it is seen from above.  In “The Secret History”,the book, when Ikh Chiledu of Mergid was going back to take a girl from a Olhunud citizen, Yesuhei, who was hunting birds in the thicket of Onon, met the beautiful Oulen queen and took her with the help of his brothers NeguunTaish and Daridai Otchigin. In this way, Oülen queen came to be the daughter-in-law of Borjigon in the vicinity of Ulikhan Mountain, and it is said that these five branches were formed because the captured Oulen queen sobbed which causedthe water of Onon river overflowed the bank.

The northern border of Mongolia can be seen 3-4 km north from the top of Ulikhan Maikhan Mountain

Ulikhan Port is located at the border for passenger and cargo transportation between Mongolia and Russia.
